The king was tired and fed up with all the talking about hilsa, it made the king lose his temper. He announced that even Gopal, the wittiest man in his court, can’t make everyone stop talking about the hilsa fish. Gopal confidently accepted the challenge to buy a huge hilsa fish and bring it to the king without anyone asking him about it.
After a few days, Gopal started his preparations for buying the hilsa, he shaved his beard from half of his face and stained ash on himself. He wore torn clothes with patches. His wife was disgusted and requested him not to leave the home looking like a disgrace. Gopal dismissed her and went on to buy the hilsa fish. At the market, Gopal bought a huge hilsa fish and started walking towards the king’s palace. On his way, no one had noticed the fish, everyone was stunned to see the shabby appearance of Gopal, they thought he was a lunatic and was beheld as comical.
On reaching the court, he was halted by the guards who did not let him in. He started dancing and singing loudly in front of the royal palace. The king was puzzled by this weird man and ordered the guards to bring him in. Courtiers were shocked by seeing Gopal dressed up like a madman.
The king inquired Gopal about the reason for his ragged clothing. Gopal reminded the king about the challenge and told him that he had distracted everyone from the hilsa fish, no one had asked him a single word about the hilsa fish from the market to the court. The king laughed and congratulated Gopal for he had, once again, achieved the impossible.
