This story revolves around 6 characters. Three children – the narrator, his brother Nishad (Seven because Nishad means seventh note in music), and sister Maya. They become expert detectives when they notice that their neighbour Mr Nath acted strangely. Mr Nath was a patient of their mother who was a doctor. Mr Nath the main character was their neighbour who lived in Shankar’s house all alone. Ramesh is a character who brings food from the restaurant to Mr Nath’s room. They learned that Mr Nath paid cash and gave huge tips to Ramesh.

Nishad lost his marble once and went to ask Mr. Nath for it. He saw that Mr. Nath had scars on his face and looked thin and hungry. The children started collecting information about Mr. Nath. They thought Mr. Nath was crooked and was searched by the police for some hideous crime. But Nishad was a bit sympathetic. He was worried about Mr. Nath had no friends and started feeling sorry for him as he had no friends.
Mr. Nath is not a good person
The narrator was sure that Mr. Nath was a criminal. But Nishad thought Mr. Nath was not a bad person as his mother also used to say that he was a patient and polite person. The narrator said to Nishad that Mr. Nath was a criminal who had millions of rupees in trunks and boxes and thus was hiding from the police. The narrator thought that the scrs on Mr. Nath’s face was because he was shot during a police shoot.
Mr. Nath was not poor and lonely person
One day while going to Mamma’s clinic Nishad saw Mr. Nath and felt really sorry as Mr. Nath looked hungry and poor. He thus gave a bar of chocolate to Mr. Nath on his hand. He also got to know that Mr. Nath always had a visitor on Sunday, as Ramesh always bought two meals to the room on Sunday. Nishad felt a bit good that at least Mr. Nath had one friend.
He also thought that that friend of Mr. Nath was the one who gave him money to undergo his treatment and pay for his expenses. His friend was tall, fair and stout who used to talk a lot. Mr. Nath was a silent man who listened carefully.
Expert Detective case begins.
The narrator believes that Mr. Nath is crooked. The narrator then starts behaving like an expert detective. The narrator also says that his friend must be a partner in crime and they divide the money they get on Sundays and that is why he visits him. He opens a note about where the expert detectives are trying to find out more about Mr. Nath.
He makes a list about Mr. Nath and what mystery they must solve:
- They need to find out Mr Nath’s first name is as they don’t know it.
- The other neighbours say that Nath is mad as he is strange and unfriendly.
- He is not a talkative person and listens to others silently.
- He has to be polite to the children as he is a patient of their mother.
- They say he receives no letters.
- He has been living in the same room, Room 10 for more than a year.
- He is unemployed.
- Also, he has no visitors. Only on Sunday his friend comes for lunch.
- Food is taken to his room by Ramesh from the restaurant.
Nishad doesn’t pay attention.
The narrator looks at Nishad to see if he understands how important being an expert detective is in this case but Seven doesn’t pay any attention to him. And in return he keeps on thinking how lonely Mr. Nath must be. The narrator argues that since Mr. Nath is a criminal no one wants to be his friend. Seven says that Mr. Nath might not be a criminal and the narrator must not prejudge anyone.
